Will RIM Add a Free BBM Music Tier for it to Take Off?

BBM Music BlackBerry Music

When I first heard of BBM Music I really liked the idea. The concept of social music appealed to me and I actually was proud of my selections. The problem I have with the service stems from something I mentioned during our interview with BBM Music Senior Project Manager Nick Patsiopoulos. BBM Music needs to offer something competitive with a free tier to better compete with other offerings.

I simply told Nick that for not much more I can subscribe to Pandora, Slacker, or Spotify and listen to all the songs I want from both my BlackBerry and any computer. There is no free tier like there is with comparable services so it is either pony up $4.99/month or no music for you. I am not sure if I think advertising is the solution but RIM needs to figure this one out pronto.

BBM integration can add sticky-ness to a solid app but there needs to be a solid value proposition if they want you to pay for it. What do you think?

  1. I gave RIM a thumbs down on the price tag in my beta review because I don’t know what’s new out there that matches my style (that doesn’t get added) and I have to pay for what I want….
Note to self: what you want isn’t always what you need. I learned that from Pandora and Slacker which is a good way of shuffling various artists, songs, you have the access to block artists/songs too and new varieties constantly get added.
Did I mention that you can still get Pandora and Slacker (which in my opinion are better) for free?
I have to disagree to some point about the ads…it works with a lot of companies, it can work with RIM. Make a free version please.

  2. Absolutely. RIMM needs to release a free version of BBM music that is: add supported, tie BBM music with BBM games, and BBM messaging, offer BBM Music contacts that include famous celebrities like the Blackeyed peas, include a larger song base – at least 200 songs to start.

  3. The other problem I have with BBM Music is that the Electronica selection is poor. You get a few big names and some compilations, but that’s it. There are plenty of good catalogs that RIM could use.

  4. Agreed. That and making it available worldwide or it will never gain enough traction.

  5. I immersed myself in bbm music. Just saw it as a waste of memory on my device. I agree that with other free players, charging isn’t the best route. You couldn’t keep the music. In my findings I could only play when on wifi. Never even found a song on a friends list that I would like to even purchase.
