“Themes” Start Showing Up in PlayBook App World

PlayBook Themes

This one is a real head scratcher. RIM has yet to confirm or deny if developers will be able to theme the BBX OS like they can with BlackBerry 6 devices and earlier. Still that has not stopped RIM from opening up a new category in App World for the PlayBook for themes. The thing is the first “Theme” in that category is really just an app with some wallpaper options. The app is called “Christmas Themes” by Matthew Bailey for $1.99 which offers you multiple Christmas themed backgrounds for your PlayBook.

What do you think about this? Should RIM be marketing these in a separate “Themes” category?

Thanks Terrence for the pictures and other for sharing the news!

  1. Oddly enough this Themes header has appeared all week – until today…

  2. David is right. It is gone now. Personally, I think it should go under a wallpaper or personalization group. It’s not really a theme.

  3. there is a very simple explaination for this……..

the developer set the product under THEMES – HOLIDAY
in the developer portal, then only set the compatibility as the PLAYBOOK – hense why it generated a new category !!

    dont get too excited! :)

  4. I think the whole themes category needs to go away until there are actually themes available. This is just a wallpaper selector. It sounds like the developer found a nice way to get some attention for their product if they are responsible for the themes category showing up.

  5. They need to get developers focused on value-added apps rather than themes to make a quick dollar. I’d rather their be a consistent UI and keep the ebooks and themes out of an “app” store. They should just make a separate bookstore that allows ebook providers to sell content through that app. In addition, themes are so last generation; what’s next? ringtones? Come ‘on people…we can’t keep asking RIM to move forward if we only request last generation features. It’s time to let the past go and get with the times.

    • Agreed, RIMM needs to update their UI across the board, to match the competition. I would like to see some more bells and whistles like an embeded calander to check appointments, embeded app world store showing new apps and specials that looks like the website, embedded weather, stocks updates. The cooklet app for the PlayBook is a good example of a well designed UI, that should be on the PlayBook homescreen.
