BlackBerry PlayBook Price Discounts Start ending in the US – Canadians Have Until Thursday

UPDATE: cjterminator pointed out that Staples in the US is still selling the device for $299. Sorry for the mix up!

RIM clearly confirmed before that the BlackBerry PlayBook price drops at certain retailers was a holiday promotion and not a price reduction. Mac over @PocketBerry noticed that RIM’s words are now starting to come true. Best Buy and Staples in the USA have all brought their prices back to $499 for the 16GB model and upwards. Office Depot in the US is still holding true with their $299 price point that goes until October 15th. I am not sure why they decided to raise the price back up now but that is not the case yet up north.

If you live in Canada you can still get the PlayBook on sale starting at $299 from Future Shop and Best Buy Canada. Both of them clearly state that the sale ends on October 13th so get cracking!

  2. Correction needed: Staples also continues to have $200 off all the models in USA, it should be available till 15Oct (as is Office Depot). Only Best Buy has reverted back to original prices but they show both 16GB and 32GB models as back-ordered on their web sites.

    • Because it’s nice and shiny glassy thing and it’s not named i-something. But seriously, I’ve been asking myself the same question.

  4. Just can’t see the practicality in a tablet, regardless of brand. Especially with price you could get a decent laptop for. Haven’t been brainwashed by Apple so logic is still prevalent with me.

    • Completely agree with you. I can’t see a tablet effectively replacing my laptop just yet. Most people get those just because they are trendy. For me it would be just another gadget to carry around, and worry about not losing or braking it.

  5. Went into Best Buy, saw the PlayBook was stalled on the ‘configure wifi’ screen. Apparently some Best Buy sales rep couldn’t figure that step out.

    I hope that RIM includes in future reseller contracts provisions for requiring resellers to be both familiar with the products they’re selling, and to ensure that it is configured to be at least minimally functional. This is ridiculous.

    • I had a very similar experience the other week. Went to Staples and the Playbook was sitting there with blank screen. I picked it up and it was actually powered on, but stuck on a password screen. Way to go, people!
      I think RIM’s good work gets seriously under-mined by clueless reps in stores, and that goes for all Blackberry devices.
      They just don’t seem to know much about the product, and quickly try to steer you away from them.
