RIM Looking for Two BlackBerry Runtime for Android Apps Engineers

RIM is clearly working hard on getting Android apps running on the PlayBook but one of our writers pointed out two positions RIM has posted on their LinkedIn page that are very telling. RIM is looking for a “BlackBerry Runtime for Android Apps – System Software Engineer” and a “BlackBerry Runtime for Android Apps – Compliance Engineer” in the San Francisco Bay area. It even has some cool responsibilities with the software engineer responsibilities:

  • Work on all levels of the Blackberry Runtime for Android Apps, from operating system to user interface 
  • Keep the high performance BlackBerry Runtime for Android Apps up to date with the latest open source software and features
  • Enable deep integration between Blackberry Runtime for Android Apps and Playbook platform for a seamless user experience
  • Drive effort and features to make BlackBerry Runtime for Android Apps the fastest runtime in the market

The compliance Engineer Responsibilities include:

  • Systematically identifying categories of content compliance issues for BlackBerry Runtime for Android Apps
  • Identifying root causes for non-compliance of Android applications on the Playbook platform
  • Creating workarounds and alternate implementations for compliant behavior
  • Devising content guidelines for developers to inform them of compliance related pitfalls

POSITION SUMMARY

The Handheld Application Architecture team is searching for the most creative, innovative and motivated individuals in the technology space to focus on building RIM’s next generation device platform based on Playbook technology and QNX. 

This exciting role involves responsibilities for building and optimizing the BlackBerry Runtime for Android Applications. You must be at home with Java and C/C++ development in addition to other managed runtime APIs.  Your impressive experience in leading embedded mobile smartphone platforms will catch our attention, specifically, iOS, Android, Windows Mobile, and Palm WebOS. Additionally, knowledge of Java platforms outside the smartphone space is highly attractive!

Desired Skills & Experience

  • Expert Java and/or C/C++ programming skills, especially on resource-constrained devices and platforms
  • Intimate knowledge of leading smartphone platforms such as Android, Access, iOS or WebOS
  • Intimate knowledge of open source development tools and source code management, such as git
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering/Computer Science/Computer Engineering
  • 4+ years of industry experience

ADDITIONAL ASSETS

  • Experience with QNX
  • Intimate knowledge of Java platforms outside the smartphone space, specifically Java SE or EE, as well as the use of Java based tooling for development, testing, build and deployment
  • Android device implementation, porting
  • Knowledge of internals of virtual machines: ECMAscript or Java or Flash, preferred but not required
  • Understanding of standard networking protocols: IP, UDP, TCP, HTTP
  • Understanding of current web standards: HTML, XML, CSS, ECMAScript

  2. This is very interesting. Could be a double-edged sword for RIM but I hope they handle it well.

    With the low volume of shipmets for the PB making Android apps available makes a lot of sense. I think developers like me would find it much easier to port their apps to Android (which many of us have) instead of starting from scratch with the Air stuff specifically for the PB.

  3. Wait, didn’t they have one (or more…) already a long time ago working with them to get the Andriod world into QNX?
    Did they fire him/her or do they need more software developers???
