RIM has gone ahead and updated the version of BlackBerry Messenger available in the Beta Zone this week. This update brings us to v6.0.1.15 though it comes with a big caveat. They are asking users of BBM Music to NOT upgrade to this version. My guess is that is because of incompatibilities which is not promising. This is what RIM had to say about the update:
BBM Development teams have focused on fixing file and picture transfer issues. Additionally, this latest BBM beta release includes subscription payment support for platform-enabled applications.
You can pick up this latest beta of BlackBerry Messenger in the Beta Zone. Let us know what you find.

This makes absolutely no sense!
Why would a company release a beta version of software that is not compatible with another product that the same company currently has in beta?!? What makes this even worse is that BBM 6 is REQUIRED for BBM Music — one would think (/hope) that the two beta product managers would coordinate in order to avoid conflicts such as this. Sometimes I think that internal release schedules trump common sense…

Because it’s *beta* perhaps? Relax, I’m sure an update is coming.

It seems to handle file transfers much better than before. A 29kb voice note was just sent, instead of being sent on 15kb packages.
Can anyone test and confirm?

Yes. There was a picture and file bug fix. I updated anyway. No issues with BBM or BBM Music.
