Bell Document Shows Wi-Fi Hotspot Coming “Post Launch” & Torch 9860 Launch Date

torch-9860-wifi

The latest news from up north is that Bell is getting the BlackBerry Torch 9860 on August 22nd. Also interesting is the spec sheet for the Q3 BlackBerry lineup from Bell that sheds some light on the BlackBerry 7 Mobile Wi-Fi Hotspot feature. The document scored by MobileSyrup clearly states that Wi-Fi hotspot functionality will be available via a software update post launch. Hopefully RIM means that update is coming less than a month after launch because I know I could really use it for my PlayBook and laptop!

  1. And be an update that maybe the carriers can’t block??

    • I think you got it Scueby!

One carrier might not release an official OS with the software on it

Although with the ability to use OS’s from multiple carriers unchanged, should be easy for us to get it on our phones if our respective provider says no

  2. Is the 9860 only have 4 GB of memory? I thought it was identical to the 9900 which has 8 GB of device memory.

Good point by scuebydue: carriers should not be blocking updates!!! Poor for consumers, poor for business. If Apple devices can be updated without carrier interference, this puts them at a HUGE advantage if RIM can’t do the same!

  3. Let me guess, we have to download leaked versions to make it work (or from other vendors that would allow it)
I still can’t get over the bridge app that was for ATT that turned out to be nothing other than a way to block your bridge browser… :-(

    • I’m still using the leaked bridge version, if it ain’t broke, why volunteer money to fix it. Expect AT&T to do the same with any wifi hotspot update, they are so concerned about the user’s experience….
