Rumor: PlayBook Android Player Pushed to "Late Fall" Release?

While at BlackBerry World RIM was saying that the BlackBerry PlayBook Android Player would be coming in Late Summer along with the Native SDK. With August being late summer and still no announcement it looks like we may be having a later release for the Android Player. Engadget heard from a reliable source that the Android Player for the PlayBook wont be available in beta form until "Late Fall." With Fall being defined as September through November that could be a few months. That would be kind of sad because the early beta that leaked of the Android Player is actually pretty functional.

This rumor goes against RIM’s official statement about the Android Player leak they made on July 22nd that said:

“An older version of the Android App Player beta software for the BlackBerry PlayBook was inadvertently posted and has since been removed. We recommend that users refrain from downloading and installing this software since it is outdated and non-functional in many respects. The official beta release of the Android App Player for the BlackBerry PlayBook is on track for release later this summer.

So it could be that the beta release is still on schedule but the official release is set for late fall? Let us know what you think!

  1. Talk about dropping the ball. *sigh*

  2. And this isn’t a rumor nomore its late September I posted the picture of the os version and release month

  3. not another delay 🙁

  4. It’s too bad they couldn’t release this sooner. I have a feeling it will help sales quite a bit. The lack of apps on the PlayBook is a big problem and it will go a long way towards solving that.

  5. I’m telling you .. its going to drop when the playbook 3G / 4G released!

  6. Would it kill RIM to just once beat their own ANNOUNCED target release date? If it was borderline, say its targeted for late fall and then soak in the praise you’ll receive when you surprise people with a late summer release instead. As much as I hate the mainstream media, they shoot themselves in the foot sometimes.

    • I mean, it worked with the Torch…wasn’t it out within like 9 days of confirming it? RIM hasn’t been too good with target dates this year…PB, a lot of native apps (kindle), now the Android player. Heck, if we didn’t have some info already, I would tell them to say 2013 for anything and everything QNX and watch the stock soar when it comes out 8 months early. Make public perception work for you…oh wait, that’s marketing and aren’t they still without a marketing exec?

      • RIM is just swinging wild now. To my surprise, HTC has that Facebook phone, and it is the same exact concept as the Bold touchscree qwerty. One. RIM keeps lying, thinking that when the truth comes out we’ll all have amnesia. Two. This is already a disaster. If they would just admit it. The playbook’s capabilities aren’t going away. They just need to stop with the teasers, and get to work, and just put out product. They do more talking these days. I remember when BB didn’t have any commercials, now I see playbook commercials all over the place.
