RIM Updates BlackBerry News App to v1.1 – OS 7.0 Only?

I am not sure what to make of this one so let us know if you figure out more info. Tim let me know that RIM has announced BlackBerry News App v1.1 in their official forums. The thing is nobody has spotted the app in App World yet though that has not stopped RIM from changing the description to reflect v1.1 and putting up knowledge base articles about it. My current theory is that this new version is only available for OS 7.0 devices in App World though this version simply brings it to closer parity with what Viigo use to have before RIM acquired it.

The new version 1.1 of BlackBerry News adds:

  • Language support for English, Spanish and Brazilian Portuguese
  • Unified Search for BlackBerry News articles on the device
  • All New items folder view
  • Google Reader Import
  • BlackBerry ID for OS 7.0 support

Let us know if you spot the update at this link in App World for your device

  1. Not sure if it has anything to do with this, but my BlackBerry News for PlayBook updates only to July! Have tried to delete and reinstall, no luck!

  2. I hope this doesn’t turn out to be true….I really hate artificial limits. OS6 and OS7 aren’t so different that apps should be made for one version over the other.

  3. they need to update that app its trash

  4. More and more apps are posting updates for OS 7 only — Poynt has recently done the same for their BBM-enabled release (with a promise for OS 6, etc “soon”). It’s sort of a slap in the face to users who have no access to OS 7 devices (i.e., pre-release only).

  5. PT_BR enabled? How cool is that?

  6. Google Reader “Import” bah who cares. You’ll use that one time. To really play this app needs full Google Reader 2-way synch.

    • RIM really knows how to take something good and really really under deliver in short words they really know how to screw it up. Lol

      • i think they doing it this way cause when they converted to os 5a lot of apps could not run at all cause devs didnt have the time to convert or anything

  7. What’s the point of it when we have the social app?

    • Because some of us have no need for the bloated and battery hungry social feeds app. In fact, I had deleted social feeds off my Torch within the first two weeks I had my phone and by battery life nearly doubled. It may be better now with newer OS’s (running build 600 now), but I never needed the app and don’t miss it.

    • The point? Not everyone lives their life on Facebook and Twitter. We want news, not advertising and agenda-pumping.

  8. Maybe its some error or there is bigger things in store haha

  9. Looks like a new icon in app world
