BlackBerry 6 Browser Search Bar Now Goes to Google Mobile Site!

BlackBerry Browser Google Search

Finally! Its amazing how the small things make such a big difference. Since RIM introduced the Google search bar in BlackBerry OS 5.0 (I think) it has always directed searches to the Google desktop site. For the last few days I have noticed it is finally going to the new Google Search page they just released for BlackBerry OS 6.0+ devices with WebKit browsers.

I cannot confirm if this is the case for those of you with devices earlier than OS 6.0 but if so let us know in the comments. Thanks Shaun for reminding me about the change. Both of us are not sure what finally changed and if it was on Google or RIM’s part. Either way I am MUCH happier now…

  1. Heading to google.com is landing at the mobile page. The usual mobile page.

  2. nice catch!

    mine does the same!

  3. Yeesh. About time. Does this apply to universal search too? This is something that’s been bugging me for awhile.

    • Yup universal search is fixed too. It could have been RIM pushing out a new browser search bar option kind of like how verizon does for bing or it could be Google is finally forcing a redirect to the mobile site for that client string.

  4. I was just going to report this. It is great.
I can’t imagine how this could be a RIM fix. Is it something they could modify on their servers? I think this might be some Google intelligence, sensing your device and redirecting you much like Wikipedia does. The BB Browser Wikipedia search sends you to the main wikipedia site but you ultimately end up on the mobile site. It really isn’t that complicated. I’m not sure what’s taken Google this long.

  5. Are you sure it’s not because you’re on Google+? I think it’s the cookie that tells it to use that page.

  6. Yesssah! Thanks for this, I never used it because it redirected me to the desktop google site.

  7. Awesome…. i love it so much easier browsing now :)

  8. Still running 5xx. And going to desktop site still for me.

    • Hi MIchelle,
Thats the thing. It has always been taking you to the mobile site when you typed in Google.com. Google just announced the mobile site was revamped. The problem was the quick search bar always took you to the desktop site. Now that is no longer the case. I didn’t see anybody mention that second change :)

  9. Not the case here with OS5.0 browser, maybe RIM changed the agent string for OS6 browser and Google picked up only that one.

Still, a nice incentive to upgrade to OS6
