Quite a few users are waiting for RIM to update the BlackBerry PlayBook OS with native email and PIM but it looks like another update is coming before that. The team at N4BB is hearing rumors that RIM is testing out BlackBerry PlayBook OS 1.0.6 for “select developers” to test out in the beta zone. I have not seen the program show up for me but its worth checking out.
According to the leaked invite to the program the goal of OS 1.0.6 is for developers to test their apps against Adobe AIR 2.7 and Flash 10.3 so they are optimized and ready for the Tablet OS 1.0.6 release. Here are the details:
“On behalf of Research In Motion®, we are pleased to tell you about an exclusive Preview Program focused on providing developers a chance to test their applications on BlackBerry Tablet OS v1.0.6. The goal of this program is to ensure that your AIR 2.7 and Flash 10.3 applications are optimized and ready for the BlackBerry Tablet OS v1.0.6 release. Please read this entire notice, as it contains key information about your participation in this program.
This program is only available to a select group of BlackBerry PlayBook developers; as such we are very interested in hearing your comments and experiences. Since the program will remain open for approximately 1 week, it is crucial to submit all issues and feedback in a timely manner. Please use the programs discussion boards and share your experiences with us. RIM moderators will review.”
Let us know if you were invited! This is the first attempt for RIM to use Beta Zone for the PlayBook so it will be interesting to see how it plays out. My guess is it will have to be tied to your BlackBerry ID because RIM has not been offering a way to do a sideload OS update or install.
