Will RIM Announce PlayBook Sales with June 16th Q1 Financials?

We knew before that RIM was going to announce their first quarter fiscal 2012 results on June 16th but it really has me wondering what they will say. They stopped reporting subscriber growth as of last quarter but what I really want to know is if RIM will announce the sales numbers for the BlackBerry PlayBook.

RIM responded to a claim last month that sales of the PlayBook at a major retailer were poor by saying it was inconsistent. They went further and vaguely mentioned that:

As previously indicated, RIM will provide a business update on BlackBerry PlayBook results on June 16.

I am not sure what a business update on BlackBerry PlayBook results means. Will they just say it is good? Will they give actual numbers? The thing is we will sort of be able to tell from what they do or don’t say. If sales are phenomenal they will announce the numbers and if they will clam up. The question is how do we tell the difference between the two. I am hoping Jim Balsillie walk up on stage and announces they have sold about a million PlayBooks…

If you happen to want to listen in to the conference call you can on the 16th starting at 5pm ET. Details…

  1. I believe they will give an actual number and provide some guidance on future sales. Especially if the sales figures are better than Zoom.

    • I think that they will give an actual number (which they will then follow up with telling everyone how it will continue to go up do to international sales).

At this point it looks as if the PlayBook has already outsold the Xoom, and already is the second best selling tablet ever.

I am pretty sure that they have sold 300,000+ by now…

  2. I don’t think they will announce as your note indicates expectations or hopes can be high annoucing a number could lead to negative reports when there should be none. Especially since we know they won’t come close to iPad.

  3. I don’t think anybody has really expected Playbooks to sell anywhere close to IPads. People will compare PB more with the likes of Zoom than IPad. A few hundred thousand – say 400k – that’s close to what analysts expected – would be good enough for less than 6 weeks.

  4. RIM stopped providing **net new subscriber** numbers. They did not stop providing device shipment numbers. Therefore, there’s no reason to believe that they will not provide PlayBook numbers.

What kind of confidence can investors have if they ommitted those numbers?

The thought itself would be rediculous.

  5. I think they need to announce numbers not just generalizations. If they just say sales are good, people will assume they have an overinflated sense of what good is. If they say they were not as good as expected people will assume it did horribly. Give the actual numbers and if possible compare them to Xoom or Galaxy Tab sales.

  6. In at least one of Balsillie’s interviews over the last few months he clearly stated they would provide actual PlayBook sales numbers with each quarter’s earnings reports. If he fails to do that, we can just dig that up and call him a blatant liar…

  7. I don’t recall him saying that but if he did then I agree that is what he will do. He chooses hisnwords pretty carefully.

  8. RIMM should provide the PlayBook numbers, which are probably better than any other tablet not called Ipad 2. The enterprise sales would be the most telling though.
