Acaras File Manager for the BlackBerry PlayBook – Network Support Coming!

Right now file managers for the BlackBerry PlayBook are far and in between. I tried one other free one and it simply did not work. I spotted File Manager by Acaras Mobile Software yesterday and I was surprised to learn it is actually pretty good. Not perfect but definitely useful. For $4.99 is is not super expensive but it really is functionality that RIM should have added to the OS natively. I have been bugging some of my friends at RIM that it needs to be included in the next OS build.

Acaras File Manager only works on the files in your shared folder and does not allow you to access system files but that is not really something most people would need. They also use an odd tabs feature that does not work like I would want it to. Otherwise it is a pretty nice app.

Features of Acaras File Manager include:

  • Multiple tabs
  • Copy files and folders
  • Move files and folders
  • Delete files and folders
  • Create new folders
  • Multiple selections
  • Get information about file and folder sizes
  • Automatically launch the registered app for the file type
  • Show and hide dot prefixed hidden files
  • Sort by name or type

The coolest part is that they are planning on adding the ability to browse your network shares with a future free upgrade. I am not sure exactly how they are going to pull that off without RIM adding it natively to the OS but who knows. Maybe they plan on porting Samba once the Native SDK is released? 🙂

You can pick up Acaras File Manager in App World for $4.99

  1. RIMM really needs to integrate this into the OS and also add integration with other apps such as well.

  2. They also need to add more CODEC compatability, I can’t see alot of my vids that are flv or mp4! I know I could use a program to convert them but why can’t RIM make it easy for the consumer who don’t know how to do this? Please RIM, be good to your followers.

  3. The link provided is broken.

I am sick of “It looks like you are using an unsupported Operating System” on My Mac 😉 !

Why don’t they allow OTA installs like Android Market instead of relying on ActiveX stuff only Windows users have access to?

  4. Simple question. If i use the computer to create a folder within the documents folder on the playbook will program like adobe and word to go be able to see the files in the new subfolder? I’d just like to organize the documents folder on the playbook. Thanks.

  5. I am looking forward to network share browsing and launching. I have set up the integrated VPN but cannot really do anything with it.
