UPDATED: RIM and Staples Recall Roughly 900 PlayBooks

UPDATE: Check out RIM’s clarification of the issue. It seems like this is an isolated incident.

A fault has been found in roughly 900 PlayBooks shipped to Staples retail locations. It is not known exactly what the issue is, but there is a compiled list of all the affected serial numbers and it  can be found here.

    • RIM determined that approximately one thousand BlackBerry PlayBook tablets (16 GB) were shipped with an OS build that may result in the devices being unable to properly load software upon initial set-up.

      The majority of the affected devices are still in the distribution channel and haven’t reached customers. RIM is working to replace the affected devices.

      In the small number of cases where a customer received a PlayBook that is unable to properly load software upon initial set-up, they can contact RIM for assistance.

  3. I think I got one of these. The user agreement woudn’t load so it was useless. After an hour with tech support I took it back to staples.

    I got another one from Office Depot the same day and no problems.

    Tech support guy said there there were problems with units purchased at staples. I thought he might be making it up.

    Really it wasn’t a big deal for me, although frustrating at the time.

    • Update, seems I was right. This was the issue, not a big deal at all but there will be a lot of howling on other sites about this.

    Glad I returned mine to them 😛
    They promised a $200 coupon book but gave me none. Talk about false advertising.

  5. Glad I’m not affected even though I also had trouble accepting the user agreement at first. It took awhile, but the playbook is working fine. I have a 32G from Office Depot.

  6. Well BestBuy did get one from the bad batch.
    I pickup my 64G on the day of launch and it was defective. I have to return it the next day.
    I call RIM tech support just before return and they could which could not help. Problem was news to them, they search for answers for over 2hrs without success, my ticket should is still open.
    Various applications would launch on its own and non-responsive when navigating. I have a video of it, just did not post it since I got a replacement without hassle.
