Rumor: BlackBerry 6.1 Is Now BlackBerry 7 But Not QNX Based

This is quite a surprise but according to Kevin over at CB RIM has decided to change the name of the next version of the BlackBerry OS from 6.1 to 7. Some weeks back Ronen mentioned that BlackBerry 7 would be a combination ot the tablet OS and the current BlackBerry OS code named Highlander. The reason is not yet know but we can expect to hear about it next week at BlackBerry World. This makes you wonder what RIM is really planning for BlackBerry OS with QNX and how soon we will see it. Personally I can’t wait to have it on devices, but if you have used a BlackBerry torch and the BlackBerry PlayBook the layout of the app icons feels a lot like BlackBerry 6 except for the way it handles app when they are open.

  1. The positive that I see is that this could let RIM release an OS 6.5 for in market devices. Obviously current devices can not use some of the new hardware based api’s such as for nfc. There have already been rumors to this effect in regards to 6.1 lite.

  2. Haha they are complaining about the number change over on crackberry. That should change the site name to Hateberry.

  3. Hey RIM is getting a little bit smarter marketing wise.

6.1 doesn’t offer an obvious enough distinction from OS6 and causes people to assume very little changes.

  4. kinda makes sense….. if its such a bump and with he hardware…. 7 makes sense

  5. This is not a rumor, RIM’s just released a new sdk and new device simulators in their Alliance portal and confirmed the rebranding of 6.1 to 7.

  6. I personally would have called it BlackBerry 6.5 because it is a fairly big upgrade (compared to 4.7 to 5.0 — laugh!) but not as big as 5.0 to 6.0. I suppose with the new next gen devices, BlackBerry 7 just sounded better.

  7. Makes sense. OS 6.1 implies only minor changes. OS 7 however, shows there will be a major change to the OS. Hopefully, it lives up to the hype.

    • Yeah, for such big changes as Laz says are coming, it was surprising a new major version number wasn’t used.

  8. COME ON RIM….. there are so many decimal numbers between .1 and .9 to 7. what are you doing?

  9. 7 should be reserved for QNX offspring for smartphones…. its the OS of perfection.
