Digital Magazines Coming to BlackBerry PlayBook from… ???

RIM’s pictures of the BlackBerry PlayBook tend to throw me for a loop sometimes. Kiddo2050 pointed out to me that RIM has a render of the BlackBerry PlayBook on their website being inserted into an envelope showing off an app with popular magazines. It only shows the top row of titles but it includes National Geographic, Rolling Stones, Harvard Business Review, and Popular Mechanics from what I can tell.

My first reaction was that it had to be the Kobo eReader that is shipping preloaded on the BlackBerry PlayBook. The thing is the app in the render looks nothing like what RIM showed off before or Kobo showed as being the Kobo for PlayBook app. I dug a little into Kobo’s magazine and newspaper service that they have for the iPhone and iPad and that’s when things got even weirder. While the Kobo Newsstand includes the Harvard Business Review it does not have any of the other three magazines featured on their site.

So I thought I would throw it out to you all. Any ideas what this app is?

  1. Maybe it is just a Photoshop render… BUT I guess we can hope! :)

  2. Based on what I am hearing, the PB is going to launch with a lot of unannounced software. This could just be another of those.

  3. Consider me crazy, but it must be the nook app. Barnes and Noble offers all these magazines. However, it may be that you can sideload magazine subscriptions as pdf’s directly from the publisher. But that’s all the more reason to be exited about the playbook! 😀

  4. It may well be an unannounced app, or the Kobo one, but I’ve found that roughly half the screenshots in the marketing material have been staged, photoshopped, or faked in some way. I’m sure something will come along some day, but there’s no reason yet to think that image is “real”.

  5. It looks like Zinio to me.

  6. My thoughts were Zinio as well.

I’ve been following Zinio for some time wondering why they haven’t taken off since with trendiness of ebooks and everything digital, you think they would at least be in the conversations but I hardly hear of them. Not sure if this is the reason why but looking at their selection, they’re missing some big names and their prices don’t seem to be much cheaper….

  7. Looks just like the Zinio iPad interface..

  8. Hmm, Guess I’ll have to check out Zinio. I’m sure BB does Photoshop these but it would seem dumb to put stuff on pics that you know your device will not do.

  9. Just check it out, cool. I hope PlayBook has this at launch!

  10. Nice!
