QNX Proved Wrong – First Article Mention in 1982!

QNX Article

Last week we told you that Paul of QNX was doing some digging into the history of QNX back when it was called Quantum. He was hunting for the earliest mention of QNX in the news and what he found was an InfoWorld article from March 21, 1983 about QNX v1.0. He then said:

I mentioned a challenge, and here it is: Can you find an even earlier article on QNX? If you can, I will bow to your superior search-engine mastery.

It looks like Paul will have to do some bowing to one of our readers Win Decker. He spotted an earlier article in InfoWorld mentioning Quantum Software Systems from October 11, 1982. The odd part is that they talk about the “unveiled multitasking, multiuser version of it QUNIX operating system.” Does that mean QNX used to be called QUNIX or did they simply get the spelling wrong!

Check out the InfoWorld article from 1982 at this link and kudos to Win Decker!

  1. Hi Ronen! QNX was indeed spelled QUNIX, albeit for a short time, back in the early 80s. I explain how the named was changed in a new blog post:

In the post, I also own up to my rather questionable search skills. :-)

    • No worries Paul. I didn’t mean it to call you out I just thought it was fun. You should do more articles like that. How about figuring out what the first application or solution built on QNX was… :)

  2. btw, I am Win. Didnt use this name because i logged in with my google haha.

  3. Also, Paul, the name in the article is Wilfred, my name is Win, short for Winfield. You can also use BlackBerrySith or Sith Apprentice as I am known by both in the BlackBerry world. Thank you sir

  4. He should get a free PlayBook!

  5. Winfield: I will correct your handle on the blog post. Sorry about that.

DavidB: Yes, I need to stop doing these challenges on the cheap. :-)
