BreakingNews Beta Adds Scrolling RSS Reader to your Homescreen

 RSS feeds3 rss feeds 4

One of the things I have always wanted RIM to add to the homescreen was widgets like weather and news. I didn’t think it was possible until a friend pointed out that ShaoSoft has an open beta of BreakingNews that scrolls the headlines of RSS feeds on your homescreen. The widget (for lack of a better word) lets you enter in a few RSS feeds and change some options to show in a news ticker. You can select up to 5 feeds and set an interval for them but the app is in a progressive beta so more feature are being added.

Check out the progress of the beta over at this thread in the CrackBerry forums. You can pick up the beta to try for yourself at this OTA install link.

  1. Okay, that’s pretty sexy.

  2. do i really have the time and wait for the text to scroll. would be easy just read the news. waste of battery too.

  3. Yes very snazzy! I’m also concerned it’s a battery drain, but time will tell.

  4. This ive got to try

  5. This is a great idea but I would imagine it must drain your battery like crazy.

  6. Any body know any good links for RSS news feed?

  7. cool concept.. can tie it into an alert RSS feed for instant alert

  8. Nah, I think it’s mostly distraction… The BB screen is already small, I don’t need scrolling text cramping the spaces. And this could like it would hog a considerable processor power…

  9. This is insanely cool. Doesn’t seem to slow down my BB and if you keep the refresh rate at a normal time, I don’t see it draining battery. My only wish is that it showed on the lock screen too!
