Streaming Video IN the BlackBerry 6 Browser? How Does Comic Vine do it?

We have had the ability to stream YouTube videos and other platforms from our BlackBerrys for awhile but that really just opened the media player and played from there. One of our readers, Diego, pointed out an interesting exception to that and even caught it on video with his BlackBerry Bold 9780. I confirmed on my BlackBerry Torch 9800 and it also works!

Here is how to replicate it:

  • Head to any of the Comic Vine videos like this one from your BlackBerry
  • When the page loads click the play button on the video
  • Then scroll down a bit and scroll back up
  • The video controls will now show and you simply hit play INSIDE THE BROWSER!

I have tried digging into it and it seems like it is streaming the video using the supported MP4 format. The thing is I have no idea how they pulled it off. I have tried experimenting with a few tags even HTML5 video tags which are officially not supported with no luck. So I thought I would throw it out there.

Anybody have a clue how Comic Vine is able to stream video to BlackBerrys embedded in the browser?

  1. I’ve been able to do that on a view websites using my BlackBerry 6 Bold 9700. it gets a little sluggish tho.

when you full screen it, it takes the whole screen like the media player

    site example:

  2. hmmmm i wish we all knew

same as videos i stream from

  3. I would love to know how to do this also. I am working with our media guy at our church to try to get the live stream and archived media to play on BB’s but he is having a hard time. Something like this would be awesome.

  4. That is awesome. If they can do it with the current hardware, its going to be spectacular this time next year.

  5. Did you guys realy watch the video?

@fubaz, I’ve been to and no matter how hard I try, I only get the mobile view. That is no different from, you click a link and it opens in the Media player. What I found is a site that can actually play videos INSIDE the browser. Completely different stuff.

@sohood, I’ve been to and well, all I found here were links to youtube.

So guys… Tell us exactly what you’re doing there.

    • Yes, I did watch the videos.
the videos work for me also. for some reason isn’t showing the embeded youtube video now with the play button,
but I watch the video that says “Meet the Stars from our BBM Flirt Commercials” right on the browser. the video with the play button was in that empty gray box you see.

the “Youtube link for mobile viewing” was always there.

also viewed video on another site that showed it like

  6. hey Ronen!

i found out YoutTube’s a month ago but wasn’t aware anyone knew how to haha. i’ll post up a video later and send you. But you can’t pause or rew/forward video. thats sad but i guess you can play HD videos. haven’t tried it though. anyway i’ll post a link here too

  7. Not sure how it’s done but they’ve had the same in-browser streaming for a while over at as well. Used to use the media player but now plays the video right in the browser on the webpage.

  8. I pointed out this browser ability on a comment post a few weeks ago. I hoped that post would win me a playbook 😛 🙂
