Rumor: RIM to Release BlackBerry PlayBook to Retail on April 10th?

IMG_2849

RIM has recently backed down from their Q1 tentative launch date to a Q1-ish March/April date for the BlackBerry PlayBook. Now we are hearing rumors from the BoyGenius that the PlayBook will hit retail locations on April 10th. According to their sources the PlayBook OS will be going to “Gold Master” status on March 31st but when you boot the device the first time it will perform a upgrade to a newer OS. Not that big of a deal but I wish the launch was sooner rather than later.

On a side note I am really curious to see how RIM does OS upgrades on the PlayBook. The QNX real time OS is known for being able to totally upgrade the OS without a reboot. Now that would be sweet!

  1. Late no? I so wanted it released in February.

  2. Better late then later

  3. As Marc pointed out in the forums, April 10th falls on a Sunday. Is it just me, or is that a strange choice for a release day?

Updating the OS without a reboot would be pretty cool for sure!

    • Yeah, I think April 10 is somebody’s uninformed shot in the dark. I can’t think of a major electronics launch like this that’s been on a Saturday. That’d be just WEIRD, unless they are thinking this way all the IT nerds will be in the shop that whole weekend prepping to hand out PlayBook’s to arriving workers first thing Monday morning?!?

  4. A little disappointed the PlayBook isn’t coming out sooner. However, if they advertise this right and make sure its ready to go upon release, they can build up momentum for its release. Note: The Xooms early release date hasn’t helped against the IPad 2.

  5. Well, in yesterday’s launch date guess I said I didn’t think think there was any way they could get it to market before April. OK RIM, show us all wrong and show this rumor to be false eh?

  6. I’m with David. RIM please show us that everyone is wrong and release it before the Ipad2. This might be a huge fail for RIM.

  7. The sooner the better!
