Another Demo of TAT’s Stereoscopic 3D HDMI Output PlayBook App

RIM’s acquisition of The Astonishing Tribe makes more sense the more demo apps you see from them. It looks like RIM is leaning on them to develop some sweet looking demo apps for the PlayBook and hopefully some that will actually be released. We saw a demo of their stereoscopic 3D app before but now RIM has put up their own official demo video of the app below:

The video shows off the PlayBook outputting Stereoscopic 3D over the HDMI output with 1080P video and Multi-Touch support. The app even looks good without glasses as you see in the video. Hopefully TAT will be releasing the source code to their apps for others to build on the or making these demos into actual apps. I am waiting to get some real alternative video players on my BlackBerry even if it is limited to the PlayBook.

  1. Just another video of TAT flexing their greatness. This was such a good purchase by RIM.

  2. It certainly does seem like another excellent acquisition by RIM. TAT has some really cool demos. Personally, I don’t think I’d want to wear 3D glasses to look at stuff on a tablet. However, the fact that you can do it is cool.

    • I wouldn’t want to wear 3D glasses to look at stuff on a tablet either. As you can see in the video, the PlayBook display does not support 3D, but with the HDMI out it can play 3D content on an enabled TV.

I mentioned in a thread in the forums that I’m not sold on 3D technology in general right now; mostly due to the glasses. They’re company specific, bulky and too expensive.

I love that the PlayBook can support this type of advanced content. It really showcases it’s power.

      • That is so true. I am not sold on neither active nor passive 3D technology. I understand shutter technology in the glasses and being that the glasses are so close to your eyes give it an effect of an object approaching. I don’t want to be looking at my screen with this cumbersome piece of eye wear taking away from my viewing experience, but passive 3D (without glasses) is HORRIBLE to me! In other words, i don’t mind wearing them 5 minutes a week or whatever. but that’s just my opinion.

  3. Rim can recognize talent. It will eventually transfer to sales.

  4. I rely don’t want that smell-o-vision!!!!

  5. This is impressive i cannot wait to get my hands on the playbook

  6. TAT is going to blow up the PB… they effort is awesome!

  7. TAT has got to be the second best acquisition RIM has made – right after QNX.
