RIM Confirms NFC Magnetometer and OpenGL 2.0 in Upcoming Phones

RIM posted two new videos from MWC Developer Day that happened yesterday. They seem to really think the hype around the PlayBook is building momentum with both of their sessions packed with 500+ attendees. This video below has Mike Kirkup talking about how the day went along with AppCircus where developers got to pitch their upcoming PlayBook app concepts for a chance to win one. The thing that really stuck out to me in the video was that Mike confirms that NFC (Near Field Communication), Magnetometer (think compass), and OpenGL 2.0 (sweet graphics) are coming in the upcoming BlackBerry devices with OS 6.1 this year. That confirms some of the specs we have heard leaked to date and is again confirmed on RIM’s DevBlog.

The second video features BlackBerry PlayBook AIR developers from RIM and Adobe talking about their Bootcamp session and what they are planning on covering. All in all it looks like devs are excited to learn what they can do with the PlayBook.

  1. Great to hear. If T-Mobile gets the Dakota before the end of Spring, I’m hoping AT&T (and in turn Rogers) willl get it even sooner! woo!

  2. Thats good news indeed… BUt means i have to fork out more $ to buy it.. haha.

Considering that im still falling short on my target for playbook, a little while longer wont hurt!

  3. Im gald to hear about some great new features. I hope the phones show up soon.

  4. Excellent. Its great to hear some more solid info on the specs of the new lineup. I heard the the iPhone 5 is rumored to also have NFC, which enables easy payments via your device if I’m not mistaken. Similar to paypass on a credit card. Very cool stuff.

  5. So pretty much everything BGR confirmed a month ago…

  6. interesting…

  7. im more interested in OpenGL2 than anything else.
