TI Shows Off 2Ghz Dual Core OMAP 5 Processor – Possible PlayBook II Update?

Omap5

Texas Instruments just started to let the world know about the 1Ghz and 1.5Ghz dual core chips they have for mobile devices and already they are topping themselves. We already know that the PlayBook is rocking the Texas Instruments OMAP 4430 1Ghz dual core processor though there is a Texas Instruments OMAP 4440 which can go to 1.5Ghz. Now TI has revealed that they have a OMAP5 5430 processor line coming out in devices during 2012 that rocks a dual core 2Ghz chip. This new chip will start going into production in the second half of this year.

TI claims this new OMAP5 chip using the pair of Cortex A15s will be THREE TIMES the speed of the previous gen 1Ghz Cortex A9s that are in their OMAP 4330 chip. Pretty crazy stuff and could mean a PlayBook would replace our desktops in the near future…

  1. Pretty insane. I could see the Playbook 2 sporting this, with maybe the new QNX smartphones being powered by power-usage tweaked 4430s or 4440s.

  2. To see these chips in the PlayBook 2 and some of the other iterations in the new QNX phones, is more than exciting.

  3. Imagine all bb’s running 2ghz and competition @ 1-1.5ghz.

    That’s will be coool!

    • That would be nice, but if history is any indication bb will start using 2GHz when everyone else has moved to 4GHz

      • Historically this is true. RIM has been (and still is) behind the competition in terms of specs. But as we’ve seen with the PlayBook, RIM is looking to change that and QNX will help them do it. There is no way a BB smartphone without QNX could handle one of these little fireball processors. The power is very impressive.

  4. The first playbook isn’t out yet and here we are talking about the second one :) gotta love berryreview :)

  5. As long as the cpu is efficient and won’t kill the battery life then this sounds awesome.

  6. if RIM would have a playbook refresh by next year whit THAT 2ghz dualcore….. oh man!! that would be the shiznit! i would gladely say Rim is back in the running….

  7. *drool*

    anyone want a battery backpack?
