Past 9 Months of BlackBerry OS usage

The chart shows how BlackBerry OS usage has changed over the past 9 months. Usage of OS 5.0 or higher has increased from 59.6% in April 2010 to 79.6% in January 2011.

Usage of OS 6.0 still remains rather low, but because this data comes from over the course of a full month rather then just the end, it is likely a bit higher then the 18.2% shown here.

This data is taken from downloads of the very popular BlackBerry strategy game Pixelated. Data starts from the release of version 2.0 in April of 2010, and goes through the end of last month.

  1. where are the 4.3 stats and 4.5?
I know a lot of people still rockin those!

  2. Pixelated = Big brother. 🙂

  3. I wonder if they are as bad as JaredCo.

    • You are misunderstanding where this data is coming from. Pixelated itself does not collect any data what so ever. These statistics instead are collected by BlackBerry AppWorld, for downloads of Pixelated.

  4. I love the game, but the stats are a bit misleading presented this way. More accurate to say this is the usage of people who have downloaded Pixelated through appworld within the provided timespan. It doesn’t account for those who had downloaded it in the time prior, and are still using it; or those who have installed it on new devices via the crappy “device migration” tool RIM provides.

    • Technically, you are correct. (Although note that the description says that “data is taken from downloads”).

However I believe that the sample size is significant enough that it doesn’t make a difference.

      • True. I’m sure there is more than sufficient data to represent the breakdown effectively.

The nature of a study such as this is of course limited to the timespan wherein the data was taken but there has to be some limits or no stats could be taken. This is a snapshot showing a trend. That is all.

  5. Funny to see how many ppl still use 4.6 and lower

  6. Kinda just seems like it just relates to the type of devices downloading the game. Might work better if the app was something a bit more common across all phones, like an advertisement traffic or something like that…

  7. OS5 is still huge. They need to get 6.1 out there!!!

  8. So, what we NEED to see is how many site visits there are to BerryReview from the various OS versions….Ronen, how’s your SQL? 😉

  9. What does sql mean?

  10. Not so much interested, but curious. I’ve heard a lot of different terms the last few days, and was curious about this new one. Thanks.

  11. This isn’t surprising because i’v heard OS 6 isn’t supported by the majority of currently in use handsets.

  12. It seems to me that OS6 was cooked up just so RIM could buy more time to cook up something to compete with the iPhone. I hope whatever they are cooking is good because I can’t wait to see what RIM has in store this year.
