Skype Mobile Client for Verizon Updated to v1.4.0.7

Skype users on Verizon just got a small version update to their application. According to Bla1ze over @CrackBerry this update just brings some bug fixes and small UI updates. I still think it is sad that Skype is limited to only Verizon BlackBerrys but I guess they have some reason for it. I am also not a big fan of the fact that this Skype client is not even a real VoIP client but rather just dials a free access number on Verizon’s network.

Verizon users can pick up the update at

Hopefully the Skype app we saw on the PlayBook does not suffer from the same idiotic limitations. Thanks Tashanna for the tip!

  1. It’s too bad the new 2011 phones don’t seem to have front facing cameras… would have been nice to have a real skype client..

  2. I believe that this was also to optimize for OS v6, which Big Red just recently “officially” released for the 9650 and others.

  3. any way to make this work on a different carrier?

    • No, as Ronen said, it seems as though the app just dials a Verizon number, therefore probably not accessible on any other carrier.

CB just reported that IM+ talk was updated, but it’s pricey at 30 bucks.

  4. Anyone know why blackberry skype is only limited to verizon?

  5. Front facing cameras would have been real cool for the new wave of BlackBerries. Oh well, have fun Verizon users.

  6. we can only hope for video…..
