I don’t find myself on IRC as often as I used to but there is a definitely lack of IRC clients for BlackBerry. One of the newer IRC chat only clients just launched a free version which is presumably ad supported compared to its premium versions $3.99 price tag. I cannot comment about the app either way but due to the volume of tips I got about it I thought it would be worth mentioning.

  1. Only time I’ve gone on IRC in the last few years is help rooms for my B&N Nook ereader, to try and root it lol. Other than that, it seems to be a niche medium for groups of enthusiasts.

    • True, yet those enthusiasts measure into the hundreds of thousands.

We have a ##blackberry channel on freenode (40-50 people on average); I’ve also got a #bbssh channel there with… I think we’re up to 17 now . ( Oh, damn, did I just shamelessly self plug BBSSH again? Oops… ) Other channels have a couple-few hundred in them.

So niche – perhaps. But that doesn’t mean it’s small.

  2. I wonder if it supports custom server addresses?

    Trying it out!

  3. I won a copy of this (I think from BerryReview 🙂 ), but I’ve never found it to be that useful anymore. Back in 1998 IRC’s were the thing, but now, rarely find anyone but a BOT.

  4. As always remember this about advertising-supported apps: as convenient as they may seem, the advertising networks used are very likely tracking your usage habits through the app. The more advertising-supported apps you have that are using ads provided by a common source, the more information you’re giving them.

Okay, off to tilt at a few more windmills.
