BlackBerry OS 6.1 Allows You to Manage Homescreen Panes

manage panes

One of the things that RIM added in OS 6.0 was homescreen panes. Personally I have found little to no use for this feature and it seems to just cause me annoyances when I accidentally swipe to the wrong pane. Don’t get me wrong I like the idea of multiple homescreens if (and only if) RIM let me manage them and reorganize them how I WANT THEM. Currently the panes just duplicate the same content over and over again. For example the main pane is going to have practically the same items as the Frequent pane.

I was really hoping that RIM would let us manage these panes just like the main pane in OS 6.1. For example I should be able to put any app I want on any pane I want and reorder the panes the way I want. Sadly that does not seem to be the case but Kevin @CrackBerry noticed that RIM will finally let you choose which panes you want to have on your homescreen. For example, I would stick with All and Downloads.

Hopefully RIM lets us setup our own panes in future builds but until then this is a step in the right direction.

  1. Finally!

This should be well-received from current OS6 users.

I’d honestly probably only have the “All” screen.. Maybe Media too.

I’m guessing this also means the Playbook panes are likely customizable too. Hopefully this is the case.

  2. I agree completely. What I noticed about the 6.0 is the lack of need for the menu button now that Tou can pretty much do it all from the home screen. Afterall, 6.0 is really just a glorified theme version. It just includes a webkit, etc. I personally don’t like all the movement on the home screen bit I’m sure ibwill eventually after using it fir awhile. That usually happens with anything that is different from what I am used to. I’m glad they are making it more user-customizable. 🙂

  3. Yes! This has been one nagging issue for me. When you are in ALL or any folder, if you are way down the list you can still scroll to the side. Then when you hit back, it takes you to the beginning. Very annoying. I only use All.

  4. I’ll be happy if they provide an option to stop the End button (the way I quickly send any app to the background) from automatically returning you to the All panel. I just want to go back to the home screen, on the panel I left there… but that’s only possible if you switch to it with task switcher, or close the app using the menu.

  5. I am going to love it.

  6. BB6.1 is looking more awesome with every leak!

  7. I think it would be nice if they included the ability to rename the sliding panes to whatever you want. I think RIM should also consider incorporating widgets on their home screen – it would be nice to see your calender, control your music player, and use BBM without leaving your screen.

  8. My only hope is the removal of bugs and lags 🙁
