A Laptop Battery Strapped to a Tablet…

With the BlackBerry PlayBook essentially being a 7” screen attached to a huge battery it makes me wonder where this battery life concern comes from. The BlackBerry PlayBook is shipping with a 5300mAh battery which is just huge. To give you some perspective my MacBook Pro has a 5600mAh battery. It easily lasts 7 hours and that is with a 2.4Ghz dual core processor, 13.3 inch screen, hard drive, and tons more. Now how much of a dent will a dual core 1Ghz processor with a 7” screen make?

RIM has admitted that the current dev BlackBerry PlayBook models don’t have power management enabled since that is the last step of RIM’s process. Yet we still have analysts and reporters bugging RIM about battery life.

Well now we have RIM on the record yet again to AllThingsD saying “We’ll have good battery life.” Any more questions? 🙂 How about “RIM can we please get a IMAP or better yet an ActiveSync client?”

Thanks Barrist for the tip!

  1. Its interesting all the hate the Playbook is getting considering the Ipad shipped without a camera, flash support (Steve said you dont need it) or apps for that matter but people still lined up to get one

    • the battery fears was one analyst from one firm, and then all the sites picked it up and made it look like everyone was talking about the lack of battery life.

  2. the worry basically came from one “analyst”, shaw wu, who somehow is privy to this knowledge.. he may have heard it in passing. But if you’re going to put something out there, name your proof and source.

8 hours on such a powerful tablet should be good for everyone, and with the multiple ways to charge, i don’t think it should be an issue.

  3. Wow, I didn’t realize the size comparison! It should last just fine then! 🙂

  4. And from what I understand that is 8 hours of USE… not just standby. So I take that as they are aiming for 8 hours of 1080p video playback or similar. So basically the standard user that just does normal web browsing and such should easily last all day and then some.

  5. 8 hours is based on continuous video playback.

In that context you would have to be working on the device for 8 hours to kill the batt.

  6. How about 8 hours of wireless streaming + video playback!!!!

  7. My Mario (Google cr48) has a 58.4WHr battery and easily runs all day but I’m not sure how WHr’s converts to mAH.

  8. ActiveSync or even direct BIS/BES Support would be welcome

  9. Its a BlackBerry device. Its not going to have a battery issue. If it can run constantly playing apps and videos and last 8 hours, then they’ll be golden!

  10. what’s the ipad mah rating? i only see “25 watt hour” on their website, whatever that means
