After we leaked a picture of one of the BlackBerry Storm 3 prototypes the rumors about the device started getting confusing. Now the team at N4BB have heard from one of their tipsters that the Storm 3 may be finally headed to production. It is still codenamed the BlackBerry Monaco and rumor has it that SurePress is gone for good. The 1Ghz processor is still rumored to be included but it might sport a horizontal keyboard instead of the vertical one on the Torch. This would round out the leaks we have been hearing about all the other device lines other than the Pearl getting a refresh and add yet another form factor for RIM.
This is definitely turning out to be an interesting week for RIM leaks. I know Verizon users really need a new BlackBerry so hopefully they will be getting a new Storm along with other devices soon.

not a fan of the horizontal slider phone.. if its another slider phone what is their touchscreen only phone?
wonder if they’re waiting to implement qnx on this form factor as to compete directly with iphone.

As I said when I emailed in about this, landscape slider would be awesome! This big deal for me though would be how to keep it slim like a Storm but have mechanism for sliding keyboard. Gotta put battery somewhere! Dumping SurePress would free up thickness though.
I would miss SurePress. Polarizing as it is, the positive feedback it provides IS nice. Sure it sucked in OS 4.7, but the 5.0 builds for Storm have all had plenty decent SurePress.

that’s my fear.. if they can make it as thin as say the droid, it could be good.. but it might come at a cost of the keyboard being effective.. same issue with the Torch and how flat the keyboard is compareed to a candybar ..

All sliders have thin keyboards. It’s a must to ensure that it fits in the housing. I agree with you on the keyboard though. I love my Tour and Bold 9650 keyboard. The best typing experience I’ve had on a phone. And I’ve used about all of them!

Whatever happened to the “phone 3″ elecite has displayed on their website? The one they “tested” eons ago? Did they make that up or is it a flop before it started? They are the only ones who made that claim. Any thoughts?
I like the model above tho. Looks lovely. Kill the buttons! Lol

That was their thoughts on what the model would be. I reviewed the theme that went along with it. lol.

Thanks for sharing. I was also going to share this, but see that you did.
I wonder how they can do a substantially faster processor with a smaller battery?

Dual core? Doubt it but who cares really! I would rather just have the VASTLY improved specs (plus Verizon compatibility) than wait for RIM to have dual core phones ready. I’m betting this latest slew is RIM’s “last gasp” of non-QNX capable smartphones and ALL dual core smartphones will come with QNX.

Newer gen processors are fast but consume less power than the 3+ year old 624MHz they’ve been using.

- Very true.. we get caught up in numbers sometimes.. ghz, mhz, mah.. but the technology can improve (better efficiency, heat dissipation) without going up in numbers

The Storm series should NOT have a physical keyboard. I am not a fan of physical slideout keyboards as the device is usually much thicker to support the slideout. If it’s any bigger, I’d rather use the extra space for a longer life battery. If someone wants a slideout, get a Torch! There are rumours of a Torch2.
I think the reason for the recent announcements is the need for video chat on BBM. These new devices may be fitted with front facing cameras.
