RIM Updates Java Plugin for Eclipse to v1.3 for Both Windows AND Mac

Java Development

This is a big day for RIM. They just announced that they have updated the BlackBerry Java development plugin for Eclipse to v1.3. The big deal is that they have updated both the Windows and the Mac variants to v1.3 on the same day. Pretty impressive for RIM when they usually let anything but Windows and Exchange straggle behind.

  1. I’m a mac and windows user. Good for RIM

  2. The Mac update appears to still be tethered-debugging only. That means they still haven’t ported the simulators to the Mac, unfortunately making the Mac plugin effectively worthless for anything beyond a gee-wiz demo.

  3. It’s a Java plug in for Eclipse, so it’s not surprising that it came out for both platforms (or even Linux) since it’s the same Java code!

It’s the underlying native SDK and simulator that need to be different.

  4. One step closer to “universal” apps that can be built once and work on smartphones AND tablet? One can dream…
