BlackBerry Torch 9800 Wins Laptop Mag’s Readers Choice Award

In a welcome turn of events the BlackBerry Torch 9800 won the Laptop Magazine readers choice award for the best smartphone of 2010. That is a bit of an upset considering it was competing with devices like the myTouch 4G and the HTC Evo 4G and beat them out by about 500 votes. Out of the 11,000 respondents to the readers choice voting BlackBerry users counted in with 35.9% of the vote.

Very interesting stats indeed. Now imagine the results if RIM recreated the Torch with a 1Ghz processor, doubling the RAM, and bringing a drool worthy screen to the game. Seems like they would wipe the floor with the competition if they did! Oh QNX how long must we wait for you…

  1. Oh I have to agree with you

  2. You and your recreations!! lol. But I agree. That and they really need to do away with exclusivity contracts. Doing this is only limiting your buying audience. I like the Torch and would love to own one (especially with a snapdragon), but no way no how on AT&T.

    • Yeah I really wish RIM would up the ante on processing power in BlackBerrys. With the lag even in BlackBerry OS 6 it could really use it. Even if they don’t up the megahertz I am sure processor technologies have improved in the 3 years since the current processor came out. It would be like using the original core 2 due nowadays instead of the new core i3, i5 and i7.

  3. I have had my Torch for about 3 months now and I absolutely hate it!!! Every time I take it out of my case it starts opening icons and it is extremely irritating. I can be putting it in or taking it out of my case it will start calling people. Yeah I know I “just need to learn how to take it out of the case” says the husband who doesn’t own a touch screen. Well my case is simulated leather and is very tight fitting on the phone, which in turn makes it difficult to take it out of the case with out pushing buttons. I have yet to find a case that is different, and/or specifically made for the Torch. Can you help me like my phone any better? I really want to smash it!!!

  4. There was this analyst I emailed back and forth, said that nobody wanted a blackberry. Guess he was wrong! Anywho, I can’t wait to get my hands on a QNX loaded Blackberry! it’s definately beat the crap out of any of those other POS’s any day of the week!

  5. Hard to fathom the Torch betting so many current “superphones”. But the audience was likely far more enterprise than consumer, so it’s not a HUGE surprise.

And yeah…RIM needs to STOP the exclusivity deals on devices. But maybe that’s how they keep the R&D budget low, get the carrier to fund development of a “exclusive” device?

  6. I agree with DavidB. The demographics of Laptop Magazine most likely made a huge difference.

Anyone want to guess who will win Macworld’s Reader’s Choice Smartphone of the Year award? 😉

  7. I bought a bold9700 and got my email fast then they start coming in 15 min rely I contacted black berry here there answer,
“is not a subscribed source meaning it is on a polling cycle and new mail will only be checked every 15 minutes or so.” mean if you don’t sign up with there email you get your message when ever. Not great if you need email now.

    • 15 minute polling of random POP accounts is pretty standard in industry. POP servers don’t appreciate being hammered with “does such and such account have new email” requests. If you have such an immediate need for email that 15 minutes isn’t sufficient, sign up for an email account with one of the many supported providers (like free gmail). Or see if your email provider supports IMAP and reconfigure your BlackBerry to use IMAP instead of POP for that account.

  8. people will scoff at an internet poll result.. but good for the torch. ive been happy with it so far and have no regrets not picking up an android or iphone, especially with the PB coming. it’ll be the perfect pair… til a qnx phone comes out!

  9. Had the iPhone for 2 weeks before taking it back and getting the Torch. No regrets. The iPhone was a wonderful gadget, but I needed a solid high performance work phone and the Torch fits the bill. Looking forward to the Torch II.
