RIM Launches BlackBerry News Feeds Beta App – Viigo Reborn?

Viigo DeadUPDATE: You can now find the News Feeds Beta in App World at this link

It was just last week that I was asking RIM why they were letting Viigo die. It turns out RIM has actually been working on a program called BlackBerry News Feeds that is launching today. They are rolling out the new application in the typical App World progressive release where more users will have access to it as the day progresses.

The app is set to go live as a beta in both BlackBerry Beta Zone and BlackBerry App World’s Test Center so check both places at the links below:

This is how RIM describes the app:

The BlackBerry News Feeds app will provide a single point that aggregates all RSS news. The app is integrated into the BlackBerry experience, making it easy to share articles with contacts, friends and family.

Hopefully the new app will retain some of Viigo’s best features without the memory leaks. Ideally they would also add in Google Reader integration but I am not getting my hopes up. Still RIM has the opportunity to revive one of the best BlackBerry apps ever made. Hopefully they hit this one out of the park! Social Feeds is OK for a casual RSS reader but it really was a disappointment for users who rely on RSS for their daily news dose.

  1. Is there a direct link for those of us that can’t access appworld?

  2. You complain about Viigo dying and 3 days later RIM comes out with an RSS reader…

  3. No Google Reader support = huge step backwards.

  4. There are like 10 posters on here. RIM doesn’t care what is posted here. If it were CrackBerry then maybe you could think that.

  5. i already posted this, but i really want to encourage pople to submit feedback, so here it is again:

    its basically viigo.

im super pumped because i didnt want to update to os6 solely for lack of viigo support. its, honestly, the most used (non-core) thing on my BB.

there are a few things missing : save an article, email article to me, custom titling of feeds, date breaks, delete prior and the ability to delete without confirming a second time. the fact that the ‘full article’ option just opens in the browser instead of in-app text display really sucks since you lose what you’d been looking at in the browser window, but that could be fixed by making ‘full article’ launch in a new tab in os6. oh, and everyone seems to really care about google reader support, which i dont really care about but, whatever, enough other folks do.

im sure theyll add most, if not all, of that stuff soon. remember, its supposed to be a beta.

mention whats missing in the review area on app world and leave feedback at

they cant fix/add anything unless we let them know what we want.

  6. Lack of Google Reader integration is the reason why I went with BerryReader.

  7. Its a good first step in Viigo reborn.
