Free BlackBerry PlayBook Offer Details – Launching in February?

Free PlayBook Offer Thanks to Dave for pointing out that RIM has actually posted the details on the free BlackBerry PlayBook Offer they just included the wrong/broken link in the press release. The offer details can be found at:

The interesting thing is that the contest ends on February 1st, 2011 though RIM reserves the right to extend the offer by giving 5 days notice. Still February is the month that all of my sources have been telling me is when the PlayBook will drop.

So back to the free PlayBook for developers. Here is how RIM describes the offer:

Developers who create a qualifying application for the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet prior to its initial North American release are eligible for a free BlackBerry PlayBook tablet. The main criterion to qualify for the free BlackBerry PlayBook tablet offer is to have a qualifying application accepted into BlackBerry App World, subject to certain Terms and Conditions.

Three-step process to earn your free BlackBerry PlayBook tablet

  1. Develop and test your application. View BlackBerry Tablet OS development resources
  2. Register for BlackBerry App World
  3. Submit your app to BlackBerry App World. Log in to the BlackBerry App World vendor portal

The full terms and conditions are available at this link. Let us know if you spot any other goodies!

  1. One additional snippet: “these Terms and Conditions, and is otherwise an Application that Sponsor believes, in its sole and absolute discretion, will be in reasonable demand on BlackBerry App World, it will qualify for the Offer. ”

Hopefully this means that when you create a wrapper around the web browser component or similar simple/non-useful feature, you won’t automatically qualify.

    • Yeah they specifically disqualify those:

4.1 Applications must provide a functionality that is considered useful to the end user, as determined by Sponsor, in its sole and absolute discretion. Applications must comply with the Guidelines and these Terms and Conditions. However, the following categories of applications are specifically excluded from eligibility for the Offer:

      (a) Web launchers or shortcuts;

      (b) Web browsers; and

      (c) Applications that provide a simple, single function, such as playing noise or displaying a graphic.

    • Hey Marc!

The intention here with the free PlayBook offer is to encourage and reward the creation of awesome apps that PlayBook customers will love.

      Stay tuned… =D

This guy makes it look too easy. I have no Adobe Flash/AIR (Flex?) development experience, but being able to simultaneously write apps for desktop, Android, and BlackBerry is quite appealing, I have to admit.

  3. I agree Ronen…I think this is the best inference we have yet that PlayBook will launch in February. Hoorah, my birthday is in Feb!
