BlackBerry Atlas 8980 Spotted on FCC Website

BlackBerry 8980 I am not sure why the FCC is even reviewing the BlackBerry 8980 though they did post its approval on their website. We have seen this device before and know it is headed to the Chinese/Asian market. The FCC confirms some of the specs for the device including a quad band GSM/EDGE radio along with Wireless-N Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. There will be a 3.2 megapixel camera and the device looks like a Bold 9700 which is the same form factor we saw before.

RIM has been rolling out these lower end devices in Asian markets specifically China for awhile now. According to the original leak these are the full specs for the device:

  • Curve with faster EDGE for data – evolved EDGE
  • Radio Quad Band GSM/GPRS/EDGE with DLDC and LatRed support for Evolved EDGE
  • Downlink data speed 473kbps (with 8 timeslots)
  • Display 480×360 LCD
  • Camera 3.2 MP Auto Focus, Flash
  • Micro USB high speed, Bluetooth 2.1
  • Optical Navigation Module
  • Functional Hard Keys Volume
  • User Configurable Key
  • Speaker Phone
  • Media Keys/Mute
  • Lock – A*
  • Software BB 5.0
  • Battery M-S1 1500mAhr
  • Memory 256 MB Flash
  • 256 MB SDR RAM
  • Wi-Fi 802.11b/g/n
  • UMA supported
  • GPS Supported with A-GPS ready

Should be interesting to see if RIM would dare launch another EDGE only device in the US. Otherwise I am not sure why they would bother with FCC approval… The only reason it makes sense in China is the evolved EDGE support which is much faster than the current EDGE spec in the US. via PhoneScoop via BGR

Thanks Adrian for the tip!

  1. Hmm.. no 3g.. normal camera..

  2. “We have seen this device before and know if is headed to the Chinese/Asian market” – Shouldn’t if be it? Sheesh. I have a PHD in BlackBerry from 3 universities. Proof read? LMAO…just joking..but I had to after yesterday :) or better yet, let’s pull a Kanye..”Hey Nelly, I’m gonna let you finish your rant, but I’m gonna comment first”

That was fun. I’m done now :) Sorry.

  3. Maybe by releasing low-end (i.e., cheaper) models, China won’t resort to making knockoffs like what they did with iPods and BMW SUVs. GojiBerry Bold 8888 or Lychee Curve, anyone?
