BlackBerry Maps Gets a Visual Overhaul – Follow These Instructions!

RIM has announced that they have updated the BlackBerry Maps with a new optimized look. The announcement was made on their BlackBerry Developer’s Blog of all places and mentions a few of the other nice updates that RIM has provided in their mapping data. You can see a sample of what the old maps look like (left) and what the new maps look like (right).

Old BlackBerry Maps Look New BlackBerry Maps Look

Here is a nice summary of them:

  • 34 new countries, including Australia, Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, New Zealand, The Philippines and Taiwan.
  • New optimized visual appearance of maps
  • Stronger rendering engine
  • New color scheme (My favorite feature update)
  • New POI databases for hospitals, universities/colleges, police stations, train/subway stations, shopping centers, parking, parks, and airports added wherever available
  • Still blocked by AT&T on their BlackBerrys… Shmuks!

To get the new features you need to open BlackBerry maps (at least that is all you should have to do) The catch is that you need to perform the following steps on your BlackBerry to get the extended coverage and visual optimization in BlackBerry Maps. Shadid over at the BlackBerry Developer Blog was kind enough to detail how to get the new features enabled on your BlackBerry. As you can see the only real stickler is BlackBerry OS 5.0 devices which need to have bundle 1057 or later for this to work. OS 4.7 and lower and OS 6.0 devices can just clear the cache. I am guessing that new or freshly formatted devices will hopefully pull these new features automatically and not have to clear the cache to work but only time will tell.

Here are the instructions on how to update BlackBerry Maps:

Updating BlackBerry Maps with BlackBerry® Device Software 4.7 or Lower

  1. From the home screen, go to Maps.
  2. Press the [Menu] key and select Options.
  3. Press the [Menu] key and select Clear Cache.
  4. Select Delete when prompted to delete cached entries.

If you do not wish to update your software, you can follow the instructions below (for the BlackBerry Device Software 5.0 after Bundle 1057) to receive the additional map coverage and new map design. However, the new POI icons will not be available.

  1. 9650, v5.0.0.975 (Bundle 1600) — looks SWEET compared to the old!

  2. Works on ATT who said it doesn’t. Yeah you can’t find the icon but if you send your location to any bbm contact without actually sending it and clicking on the view you will access the bb maps.

  3. Excellent. What a difference colors can make.

  4. I haven’t tries it yet… BUT, is the new version better than Google Maps?

  5. GRRRR! Can’t try this. In OS 6.0.0.333 on my 9650 I get the same error I get on a few other apps:

Error starting net_rim_bb_maps: Error loading module ‘net_rim_bb_maps’ VerifyError.

  6. Help anyone. I misread the directions for the update and deleted BB Maps. I can’t find how to get it back. The BB Maps link on BB seems to only put lbs_ribbon, but not the BB Maps app. I just tried app loader and it didn’t put it back nor did restore.????????????
