Chat on Facebook Brings Facebook Chat to your BlackBerry

Chat on Facebook This one has me a bit confused. One of our readers, Doris, sent us a tip and link for what she thought was a free Facebook Chat Pro app for BlackBerry. I did a bit of digging and from what I can tell the app is not free and actually costs a very reasonable $3.99. (Let me know if you learn otherwise) I finally got around to installing it since I don’t really use Facebook Chat so I thought I would mention that it has been renamed to Chat on Facebook and has just been updated to v2.0.24.

The new 2.0 version of Chat on Facebook adds the following features:

  • You can now login with either your Email, Phone or Username!  No need for a username anymore!
  • Automatically reconnects on device startup
  • Current Chat Conversations are shown above Online friends, like BlackBerry Messenger
  • Notification icon next to Chats with new messages
  • Facebook Profile icons shown in header
  • Better keep-alives, less disconnects
  • Less data and battery usage
  • Offline Facebook friends are not shown, in order to save data usage
  • New improved app icon
  • Many bug fixes, thanks to our users and your patience while we make the app better!

These features are on top of the core feature set which:

  • Shows online and idle Facebook friends with profile pictures!
  • Initiate a chat or respond to a chat request from a Facebook friend
  • Integrated chat screen similar to BlackBerry Messenger®, you can see what you type while you receive a message from a friend, no need for a seperate window
  • Stays connected in background, automatically connects to Facebook on startup and reconnects if connection is dropped
  • Popup dialog, vibrate, sound and LED notification when a new Facebook Chat message arrives
  • Fully customizable notifications

You can pick up Chat on Facebook from Smarter Apps for $3.99 at this link in the store.

  1. I was sent a link to a free FaceBook Chat Pro in BBM and I broadcast it to other BBM contacts and some came back saying it worked find. I tried to login but it didn’t work for me, I didn’t attempt it again. I hardly use FB. But I think I still have the free link saved.

  2. Meebo is free, and Nimbuzz is also free but not as reliable as Meebo, in my opinion.

    • I’ve read good things about Meebo but doesn’t it require you to sign in their service? This might be a none starter for many. For me, at least, I would probably need to see it in action first. Also, does it automatically log you out after a certain period of time or keep you logged in indefinitely?

  3. I reviewed this for Berryfication. It’s a good app, but really it should be available from RIM and FB for free. This past update was a good one and brought it up to snuff. Theres still some issues with scrolling where it looks like your contacts are duplicated

  4. this is not bad, although how long is going to last until facebook adds chat to bbapp

  5. Don’t forget im+lite also has fb chat for very long time.

  11. I’ve been using one called “free chat for facebook” from the app world. It’s 100% free. Shows profile pics, allows you to customize the sounds for notifications. I like it a lot, makes keeping up on fb chat very easy
