With ExtraKeys Your Volume and Mute Buttons Are Convenience Keys

extrakeys shaosoft Once of the things I have missed on my BlackBerry Torch 9800 is the second convenience key I had on my 9700. There have been a few solutions that let you press and hold or press the convenience key multiple times but ExtraKeys from ShaoSoft takes a different approach. ExtraKeys makes you volume up, volume down, and mute/play button into extra convenience keys on your OS 5.0+ BlackBerry.

ShaoSoft found a way to make ExtraKeys turn off when you are playing media or running a media app. This includes 3rd party apps like Pandora, Slacker, Nobex, Flipside, Tunein, iHeartradio, and the default media player. I am hoping they expand this app with the push and hold and multiple tap shortcuts but for now I am loving it.

You can pick up ExtraKeys in the store on sale for $1.99 (reg $2.49) at this link. There is also a free trial available for you to try before you buy.

  1. Yeah, that was one of my first gripes when I got the Torch – “What did you do to my second convenience key?”
I think RIM should pay for this app for us!

  2. Great app!!! Aready purchased it.

  3. SixTools by ShaoSoft does similar, but with some more features like orientation lock option in the menu, etc.

  4. I’ve been using Six Tools (http://www.getblackberry.info/open-beta-six-tools-the-essential-utility-app-for-users-running-os-6/) and it’s free. It also allows you to customize those keys (in addition to orientation locks if you want).

  5. Just noticed that ExtraKeys is also from ShaoSoft (makers of SixTools). Strange that they are selling ExtraKeys but providing SixTools for free.

  6. Very useful app! I have used it for several days, recommend it!

  7. I say take the bump up to SixTools. It has this feature plus the absolutely necessary ability to have a sound effect upon opening and closing the Torch’s slider. Nothing says geek like the Star Trek communicator sound!

Oh it has some other stuff like orientation lock, precise battery meter and some other stuff, but how cares about that! You know you want that slider sound effect, all the rest is just frosting.

  8. i will have to try this app!!

  9. The only issue with SixTools for me is I don’t use a 9800. I’m in love with my new 9650 and ExtraKeys works awesome for it. Sure there’s a Free trial as well. But SixTools is a Torch Only product as far as I can see. So I’m pumped about ExtrKeys for now!

  10. This one is good. I bought it. The only thing I found is that when I out the app “Waze” (My favorite) it doesn’t work on any of the assigned keys; whether its Vol Up, Vol Down or Mute/Play button.

Are the developers hearing this? Can you fix it for Waze application for Blackberry?

I am using 9700 with latest 5.0.0.979 OS.

Rest all works fine so far.

    Thanks
