Some Iowa Law Officers Handing Out “TXTNG KILLS” Thumb Bands

texting kills While I am still trying to wrap my head around the latest Silly Bandz craze, Iowa officials came up with a creative take on the popular Livestrong wrist bands. According to the WSJ certain Iowa police departments are handing out colored thumb bands at schools and to texting drivers. The bands simply state “TXTING KILLS” in pink, black, and blue which is an appropriate message.

This new approach fits in well with that recent study that found bans of texting may increase crashes. I am curious if it will catch on in other states…

  1. Hi, im a Student in highschool and im doing a project over texting while driving. I came across your story on these thumb bands and I was wondering if you could give me more info over them. I have to give 3 presentations to the highschool kids in a theater packed full of kids and I want to see if i can score some of these bands. They are great and I think would really catch the attention of the teens here. My sister is one of those people that texts while driving and it drives me absolutely insane! If you could send some info on the whereabouts or even possibly a phone number to the Iowa police department so I can get ahold of them, that’d be great!

    Thanks, Steven.

  2. Steven, try Googling “Des Moines Iowa Police Department” or “Iowa Department of Public Safety” for their phone numbers. A friend of mine lives in Iowa and she said the thumb band craze is slowly getting out.

  3. I am interested in finding out where we can get these bands in Massachusetts. I would like to introduce to my family and students.
