Imation Defender F200 Biometric Flashdrive

Website: Imation
Price: $258 on Amazon
Rating: 9

The Defender is one of Imation’s new ultra secure storage devices. It adds complex and reliable fingerprint security to the simplicity of a thumb drive.

Whether you need to protect confidential files or you just want to hide those private photos from your romantic weekend, the Defender protects your data without a lot of fuss.

Build: The Defender feels solid; it is enclosed in a metal casing with a removable cover. It could definitely take a fall, maybe even a bus who knows.

Setup: All the software is in the Defender. You can setup two fingers for swipe access. After setup, plug it into any computer, it runs the onboard program and prompts you for your finger swipe and your in!

Real World Use: I was worried that while a cool feature, the fingerprint security would ultimately leave me frustrated–swiping my finger in vain while trying to access my data. But over my week and a half of testing, I was able to access my data on a first finger swipe.

If you want to carry your data with you on the road but are worried about security, the Defender is the perfect solution.

  1. hmm… I can get a Transcend 8GB Biometric USB flash drive for $31 on Amazon and they work flawlessly. We have about 60 deployed across my organization – a community mental health provider, so HIPAA & consumer confidentiality/security is a MUST. Nice try, but no thanks…

    • Hi Ben the high premium comes from hardware encryption and protection instead of software. Software is vulnerable. Its also the FIPS certification which is unusual for a flash drive and required in many industries including the spy business :)
