Balsillie Confirms 64GB PlayBook @ GITEX

Balsillie PlayBook 64GB

Otoniel over at PocketBerry noticed a nice little addition to the PlayBook specs in the GITEX presentation by Jim Balsillie. In it Jim is showing off a slide showing different PlayBook options with a 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB versions… That is compared to the 16GB and 32GB versions that RIM was showing off at DevCon. The 64GB version was a pretty obvious step but we did not have any confirmation that it would happen.

UPDATE: DavidB pointed out the huge 5300 mAhr battery!

So what will you do with 64GB on your PlayBook?

  1. Did you notice the honking huge 5300 mAH
battery? That’s a monster. Gotta be well over half the weight of a PlayBook.

I hope the PlayBook comes with mkv container support. I’d love to use mine for watching video I have saved in mkv’s.

  2. I just can’t wait to get a Playbook period!!

  3. huge battery and now we know the memory size all we need if the pricing.

  4. Yeah I cannot wait for it. Do you really have that many MKV files? I thought the Matroska container fell out of favor…

    • As discussed offline, bunches and bunches.

Sure hope it’s media capabilities include a DLNA client! Then it won’t matter most of the time if it natively supports any container, as I can just stream locally from my PlayOn.

Away from home will be another story. My hope for mkv container support is because that will save me from having to transcode just to watch my stuff on the PlayBook.

  5. I hope the price is right..

    • Here’s my plan:

I’m totally guessing it just MIGHT be available 1st week of March. That’s 20 weeks away. So my next guess is it will cost me $600 for the one I want plus accessories (slip case, screen protectors, extra charger, maybe a docking cradle, whatever), yeah, total shot in the dark but I think reasonable. So if starting today I set aside $30/week, I’m there! Hmmm….so can I keep to my plan to have it cost me “nothing” out of pocket? We’ll see!

If it comes in less, I can splurge on something else too. Now if it launches earlier than that, I’m in trouble. :) But the way RIM hardware launches are usually delayed, I don’t think early March is gonna end up too far off one way or the other.

  6. dont forget the beautiful dual-core 1Ghz CPU

  7. EXCITED ABOUT dIVX!! I have over 700 files to playback!
