FAQ: Get Default OS 5.0 Ringtones for your BlackBerry 6 OS

krusty-clown-car At first I thought thought there were only a few users missing their default OS 5.0 ringtones when they upgraded to BlackBerry 6 on the Torch and other devices. I recently realized at DevCon that even hardcore users are wondering where their ringtones went on their BlackBerry 6 device. It is a really good question for which I don’t have an answer. I am not sure if RIM had some licensing issues or just felt like screwing with us again like flipping the N and P shortcuts but who knows.

When I first ran into this issue I just copied the ringtones from my 9700 but Tony let me know that Jeffreii has posted a great tutorial with two options for getting these ringtones back. One of them involves just downloading the MP3 files and unzipping them to your memory card. The second loads the COD files which contain these ringtones onto your BlackBerry using a tool like BBSAK of BBMCP.

Check out Jeffreii’s tutorial at this link and let me know if you find an easier way. Personally I recommend the “harder” solution since this will make all of your previous profiles work again and load faster but to each their own.

  1. This isn’t new for RIM. They did the same thing with 4.5 upgrades I think it was. Or maybe it was older than that, back in my 7100i days? I just know they’ve boned this before and didn’t seem to care then either, leaving it up to the community to cure.

  2. Does the second method replace the existing builit-in ringtones on the Torch or just add the old ringtones?
