RIM Officially Launches Podcasts App – Download Links for International Users

Podcasts app We mentioned before that RIM slipped out their new Podcasts app last night. I just got the official press release and it has some more info I thought would be interesting to share. They also got some great quotes from Podcasters on their collaboration with RIM on this project. Looks like a job well done for RIM.  If you live in the US and Canada you can pick up the Podcasts app in App World at this link.

NOTE: The only real problem with the app is that currently RIM is limiting it to the US and Canada but there are already mirrors showing up. So if you are outside the US and Canada just download those files and install. (thx Piotr)

Here is a summary of the features:

  • Browse and search for free podcasts from categories like arts, TV & movies, news and more.
  • Download audio AND video podcasts over WiFi or cellular networks
  • Podcasts can be stored on the MicroSD card
  • Subscribe to, download and play podcasts directly from your BlackBerry smartphone
  • Receive notifications when new episodes of your podcasts are available, and download them.

The other interesting thing to note is that RIM is letting content creators to submit their own podcasts for inclusion in the directory in the app.

Content providers wishing to learn more about the service and wishing to submit podcast feeds for consideration are invited to use the online submission portal accessible via www.blackberry.com/podcasts.

RIM Launches BlackBerry Podcasts

New app and service offer access to audio and video podcasts from leading content providers

WATERLOO, ONTARIO–(Marketwire – Aug. 11, 2010) – Research In Motion (RIM) (NASDAQ:RIMM)(TSX:RIM) today launched BlackBerry(R) Podcasts, a free application and service that allows BlackBerry(R) smartphone users to easily discover, acquire and enjoy podcasts from leading content providers. BlackBerry Podcasts gives users access to free audio and video content that can be downloaded over Wi-Fi(R) or over cellular networks(i) and then enjoyed through the BlackBerry media player.
"BlackBerry Podcasts offers an enriched and streamlined multimedia experience," said Alistair Mitchell, Vice President, Multimedia Integration. "The new BlackBerry Podcasts app and service makes it easier than ever to discover and download a wide range of content directly from a BlackBerry smartphone, and users can even subscribe to their favorite podcasts and receive an alert when new content is available."
With BlackBerry Podcasts, users can search the Podcast Catalog by keyword, category, channel or top downloads, and subscribe or simply preview a particular podcast before subscribing. Downloaded episodes can be stored on a microSD card, to be enjoyed at any time. BlackBerry Podcasts also leverages the push technology of the BlackBerry platform to notify users when new content from a subscribed channel becomes available.
Rich and Growing Catalog of Content
RIM is working with a growing range of leading content providers to bring a wide variety of podcasts into the Podcast Catalog. Content providers currently include: Above and Beyond, Bloomberg, CBC, Corus, Discovery Networks, How Stuff Works, HBR, NPR, PRI, Reuters, Speed TV, TVO, The Onion, Wizzard Media, Resident Advisor Podcast and many more.

– Ilicco Elia, global head of mobile for consumer media at Thomson Reuters.
"This launch is an exciting moment in digital media and The Onion is pleased to be amongst the first content providers for Blackberry Podcasts. Reaching a wider audience through new channels will always be a priority to us."
– Dan Ryan, National Sales Director for The Onion

BlackBerry smartphones are fantastic multimedia devices and with the continued popularity and rapid growth of podcasts, this is a great opportunity for BlackBerry users to find new and compelling content that they can tailor to their own preferences."

"Collaborating with an outstanding industry leader like RIM is a brilliant example of how TVO is leveraging innovative relationships to increase our educational impact and reach through digital channels. I’m especially excited that math and science literacy – both high priorities for TVO – are central to the fun and safe mobile learning experiences we’re creating for BlackBerry users with young learners."
– Lisa de Wilde, CEO, TVO
"As a producer and distributor of some of the most loved shows on public radio, PRI has to serve our fans where they spend their time. We know the BlackBerry platform is huge for them. We’re delighted to work with RIM to offer podcasts from ‘PRI’s The World’ and ‘This American Life’ to our morning news show ‘The Takeaway’ on BlackBerry Podcasts."
– Michael Skoler, Vice President of Interactive Media, Public Radio International
"We’re pleased to work with RIM on this initiative. CBC’s podcasts are among the most popular in Canada and through BlackBerry Podcasts, Canadians can expect to find an extensive line-up of CBC Radio and Television podcasts available, with new episodes added regularly."

  1. It works great! The options are what you’d expect. Only works over Wi-Fi, but that’s ok.

  2. Booo mirror link has gone down!!

  3. @Nikolaus: there’s an option to use data as well, though it’s off by default.

That being said: I don’t understand this recent trend RIM has of releasing apps that are already made (and made well) by the community. Twitter (UberTwitter), IM clients (several options), and now the podcast app (Podtrapper). It’s like they’re saying, “Hey thanks for making great apps. Also, f!@# you.” How do I know they’re not going to turn around and release an SSH client tomorrow? While that particular example is unlikely, it certainly does have to make one pause to think before developing a BB app.

    • People still have preferences though… Even though Twitter exists plenty of people still use Ubertwitter.

Also look how long it took the Twitter client to release… There’s also the possibility that the native app won’t be as good anyways (which makes it similar to having 3rd party competitors, especially since now 3rd party devs can use push apis as well).

  4. Awww man…does this mean I have to wait until the Torch is released here in the UK or will some kind gent/ladie offer a OTA for international users…. :)

  5. How do I install the application without the file. jad?

  6. Over data it has the same download limits as RIM imposes on the browser. 2.5MB or whatever. Stupid. So don’t bother if your BlackBerry doesn’t have wifi.

  7. This should have been included with OS 4
