BlackBerry App World 2.0 Beta Released – Users Crash RIM Servers…

baw23I guess nobody ever schooled RIM in anticipating demand. They just opened up the beta program for App World 2.0 for all users in the BlackBerry Beta Zone. The problem is that the bum rush of users trying to download the app has crashed RIM’s servers or at least overloaded them. Somebody from Akamai needs to give RIM a few lessons on using their CDN to handle load bursts like they do for App World.

In case you still want to try when things are back up you can pick up the beta in the beta zone at Currently you will just get a “Proxy Error” but try back in a few minutes or hours.

Proxy Error RIM

As a reminder App World 2.0 adds:

  • Split Top 25 Themes and Top 25 Apps
  • BlackBerry App World Barcode Scanning for easily grabbing apps by just taking a picture
  • More Billing Options
    • Credit cards – varies by region
    • Carrier billing – just pay for an app on your wireless bill
  • BlackBerry ID – a new device independent user identification for downloading apps and easily switching devices

  1. I’ve been trying for an hour and can’t get an OTA link. The 502 errors continue…

  2. Does the barcode scanning work if AppWorld is not installed on the phone itself? I would like to know if I can install AppWorld apps without having the bloated AppWorld program on my already cramped phone.

  3. Am I missing something? On the download page I don’t get an OTA link. There is text that asked me to make sure by BB browser configuration is set to “BlackBerry” rather than IE for Firefox. I have it already set to BlackBerry. Why can’t I download/install it?

  4. FINALLY!!!!!!! Was about ready to bash my Berry….okay, maybe not! I tried for hours though.

  5. Why anyone would want to install this is completely beyond my comprehension…. 😀

  6. I dont see it anywhere on my page. Has it been taken off?

  7. program is less than 1mb. hardly bloated
