RIM Pushing Update of Device Switch Wizard?

Device Switch Wizard

Tom and Luis told me that RIM has started to do something new with Desktop Manager. It used to be that you would have to update the whole Desktop Manager install every time RIM released an update. Recently both Luis and Tom were prompted to update the Device Switch Wizard in Desktop Manager when they tried to switch devices. As far as I can tell this is a first for RIM to force an update of a specific component.

The weirdest part is that people are not getting this update when Desktop Manager starts and checks for updates. It only shows up if you try to do a device switch.

Let us know if you are getting the same popup!

  1. I’ve seen similar for the application loader. About a month or two back, if memory serves, I was prompted in the same fashion when installing an app. Also not by normal update check but by actual component use.

  2. I’ve been getting that for a while now. I thought it was weird but I did the upgrade and it went smoothly not affecting anything. Did my switch from the Tour to the Bold and it worked flawlessly.

  3. I, too, have received the same update when using the Wizard to switch from a 9000 to a 9700.

  4. Yeah recently I saw the app loader update notice also

  5. Yes, my DTM updated the device transfer manager earlier when I was creating a backup of my apps and themes.

  6. I recently got a prompt to upgrade DM and the update was only 43MB. Probably I installed on that PC from an old download, but still it wasn’t a full DM download. Haven’t tried Device Switch yet but my Tour keyboard is being flaky so when VZW sends me a replacement (hopefully a Bold) I will have to try it soon.

    from my BlackBerry Storm…

  7. I got this notification to update the App Loader also when attempting to update my OS on the Bold 9650. Didn’t get the switch device update when I got the 9650, so it must have been after that when it was updated. I agree it is interesting that they are pushing component updates just when needed. It made me a bit nervous to have to disconnect my device to install the App Loader update after it was already processing the OS update! All came out OK though.

  8. It’s also happened to me last week when i restore my apps from DM after the wipe and new OS install. If you don’t wanna do that update that means you can’t install apps 🙂
