Verizon Makes OS Official for Bold 9650 – Tour 9630 Getting Update Soon

tour-update-pdf As predicted Verizon pushed out OS for the BlackBerry Bold 9650 over the weekend. It is available now through wireless update and through desktop manager but has yet to hit Verizon’s download page.

Rumor has it that the BlackBerry Tour 9630 will also get an update to OS today which is hinted on the Verizon support page in this PDF. Its kind of crazy to see Verizon turning out OS releases this fast. They are usually notoriously slow…

  1. Anyone else finding the battery life on the 9650 is the worst ever? I am using my old 8900 battery as a backup, charging one and completely draining the other and then switching. I have to do this at least once per day (weekend) or twice (work day). I am super careful to run few concurrent apps. Anyone else experiencing this?

  2. I have not experienced what you describe. One suggestion is to verify that within Options >> Mobile Network that Network Technology is set to “1XEV” (not “Global”) — this setting caused a lot of battery issues on the 9630 in the past. Also. you may wish to turn off wifi if you are not actively using it as the device will continue to try to find and connect to wifi networks — there are 3rd-party utilities (e.g., BatteryEx) that can be configured to automatically turn off wifi after a configurable period of time.

    • @Tom: I made the change from Global to 1XEV. Thanks! I keep Wifi turned off unless necessary, also keep BlueTooth off. Thanks!

      • FWIW, I would keep Bluetooth powered on if you use it at all — its power drain is inappreciable. Also, the device MAY prompt about enabling connection to the “Global” (i.e., GSM network) upon reboot — do not allow as this is only necessary if you are traveling internationally.

  3. I already receive a notification of the availability of OS on my Verizon Tour 9630.

also I receive email notification from RIM.
