Gowalla Takes on Foursquare with BlackBerry Beta App

Gowalla and Foursquare have been going up against each other in the mobile check-in space. It is kind of surprising that it took Gowalla so long to put an app out there but before they were pushing their Webapp.

You can download the Gowalla beta app at this link OTA though they do not have much in terms of details about the app. Give it a shot and let us know what you think!

  1. Installed on Verizon Tour. Every time I launch it, I am told there is an upgrade available. I’m running 0.80 and when I click to download am offered to replace 0.80 with 0.80. Not wanting to suffer the horribly long reboot process on the Tour, I chose not to replace it with what says is the same thing.

But otherwise looks cool so far, though it seems not a lot of check-ins going on in my area.

Strange it lists the closest “spot” as “AIM A&P” 514 miles northeast of me. But the rest are closer.

I wish the app would integrate to BlackBerry Maps or Google Maps to map a route from me to the “spot”. It doesn’t even seem to be able to offer to show me the address of the “spot”. For example the 2nd “spot” on the list is a McDonald’s about 2 miles away and the 3rd is a 7-11, but there are at least 3 McDonald’s and 5 7-11’s that are about that far so I don’t know which one without driving one direction and seeing if I am closer or farther. Not very fuel friendly so hope some mapping integration comes soon, or at least give us a “d” key for “spot” details like address.

    From my BlackBerry Tour…

  2. I got the same message about an upgrade being the same as the ver I presently had .80.
