RIM Publishes Documentation for BIS 3.1

BIS Contact Sync

We heard before that BIS 3.1 was coming in June 2010 and it looks like it is on schedule so far. The rumored feature updates were:

  • Two-way contact (address book) sync with Yahoo! and Windows Live Hotmail and Sync ML (ALT-N)
  • Ability to share credentials on the device for an overall easier
  • User able to self delete BIS account (added security)

Josep let me know that RIM has published the BIS 3.1 documentation on their website at this link. So far I have been able to confirm that two way address book sync for Yahoo will be added but I see no mention of Windows Live Hotmail and Sync ML contact sync. There is some mention in the security doc about deleting your own BIS account but it just glosses over the feature.

There also seems to be 2 different kinds of contact sync: Polling and Real Time Delivery. RIM does not explain why you would have to use polling but I am guessing that it works by polling if you make a change on Gmail and have it synced back to your device.

The User Guide also makes mentions of three different types of BlackBerry service plans:

  • BlackBerry Internet Service email – The regular BIS we all know
  • BlackBerry Mail – This does not let you add your own email accounts. You only get a BlackBerry.net email address
  • Social Networking – Their is another type that lets you add up to two email addresses where you get social networking notifications which this will forward to your device. This does not include email!!!
