YouAreHere Public Beta Brings Zoo & Park Maps to your BlackBerry

YouAreHere Volcari recently released a public beta of a cool new application called YouAreHere. I have never seen an app like this so I thought it would be fun to mention. The app lets you take a picture of a amusement park or zoo fold out paper map or download it from the web and then the app will tell you where you are while you are scrolling through the map using your GPS.

The app is attempting to replace the paper foldout maps but I am not sure how amazing of an experience that would be. Still I have to give Volcari props for creating such an innovative idea. I think they could do really well by mobilizing the maps for amusement parks and selling it to the amusement parks as a service.

If you want to check out the beta of YouAreHere you can find it in the store at this link

  1. It does sound cool, I’m just not so sure how useful it would be. I mean, most of those foldout maps are pretty huge. Can you capture enough detail with a 3.2 or 2.0 megapixel camera in your average BlackBerry to have it be useful? Plus then orienting yourself so the map knows where you are in space versus on the map, and getting the app to understand on the photo which way is “up”, both seem to be pretty big challenges. Now, if they were to partner with amusement parks and zoos and such to offer a free app with downloadable detailed maps as part of you price of admission (with built in advertising I assume), that might be something. I heard Disney has an app like that for their parks, but they charge for it and it’s only on iPhone so far?

  2. I’m pretty excited about this one. I’d need to try it out for real. Even a park with walking/bike trails should work, as they typically have their maps on posts near the park entrance. I’ll need to try this out.

  3. Create something like this for shopping malls and I’d be ecstatic!
