CardStar for BlackBerry Lets You Save Loyalty Cards to Your BlackBerry

CardStar CVS CardStar has been slowly working to bring store loyalty cards into the digital age. They do this by letting you import your loyalty cards like CVS and Duane Reade cards into their app so you can throw those keychain cards away. This does require you to hand your phone to the cashier or get it close enough for them to scan it but it does work.

The app is free and I highly recommend it. It cleared out 3 cards from my wallet and for that I am thankful. Now if only they could find a way to do away with loyalty cards altogether…

You can download CardStar OTA at this link or read more about it at

  1. 3.6MB for this app????

  2. This app doesn’t work if you have a screen protector on ur BlackBerry and iPhone/iPod. I tested it myself and looks like only works for couple of stuff and rest of the stores it doesn’t work unless you remove the screen guard/protector.

    • Hmmm….I used it yesterday at Bloom (a grocery store) and while their flatbed couldn’t read my Tour’s screen, the handheld worked perfect, through the screen protector I use. Maybe it has something to do with if the protector is polarized or not, or some other characteristic? The one I use is just plain.

  3. Yeah, the RAM footprint of this app is ridiculous. I suspect that’s because of all the graphics they have embedded in the app for each known card. I would LOVE to see them trim this down to where it goes out and grabs graphics ONLY for cards you enter.

I’ve been using this for several days, I got rid of 12 cards from my wallet! All those hotel and airline and car rental programs are now consigned to my BlackBerry.

I suggested to them that they build in the ability to read a card with the BlackBerry camera to cut down on user data entry requirement. They replied their Android version does this already and they are looking to add it to the BlackBerry version soon. Anyone interested in that I recommend going on their web site and let them know.

Now, if I could just figure out what sort of rationale the app uses to sort the entered cards. Seems to me no rhyme or reason to how the list is presented. It’s not alphabetical nor is it by the order you entered them. From a usability perspective they need to give us sorting options like alphabetical, by category, etc.

Overall a good app and especially nice for the price!

  4. Would be great if you could search for the Merchant instead of scrolling and scrolling.

Certain Cards do not display a bar code like Stop and Shop.
Numbers that appear multiple time in a row like 3333 prompts a message “are you sure you want to reset this application”? What does this mean?

    Otherwise the app works well

  5. can’t view the cards in the card list after I entered and saved them, I can only show five cards and that is it.
when I re-enter the card info, the app tells me the cards are already there???

  6. Can’t afford to use such a big app! I might be easier to use a picture taken of the card up close.

  7. If you do a battery pull or QuickPull rest then you should be able to see all the cards you entered.
