BlackBerry Getting PayPal “Bump” Payments Soon

PayPal Bump PayPal made a big splash earlier this month by introducing Bump payments in their iPhone application. The app let you make a payment by just bumping two iPhones together. It seems to be pretty popular and Jessica Dolcourt over at Cnet confirmed that the feature will be coming to a PayPal’s BlackBerry app soon.

Currently the PayPal BlackBerry app is very bloated but hopefully they will shoot two birds with one stone and fix that with the upcoming bump feature. Still this makes me wonder what direction mobile payments will go. Some vendors are pushing that the charges show up on your monthly bill while others are trying to reinforce old methods based on credit cards.

It will definitely be interesting to see how mobile payments evolve. I have a dream that one day I will just be able to swipe my phone in front of a soda machine instead of fumbling for exact change… 🙂

  1. I think the easiest would be some sort of NFC (Near Field Communications) method, where the soda machine detects me trying to buy something and the phone then prompts me to acknolwedge the payment. Alternately, a camera system of some sort so that I can pull up a QR code on my screen and “show” it to the soda machine which would then be able to go online and verify the payment and dispense my drink.

Either way the soda machine would need to be “connected”, hence the push for embedded wireless by the likes of AT&T and Verizon and such. As well, the push to transition to IPv6 soon so that there’s enough addresses for all the “connected” soda machines (and other devices too) in the world.
