With the release of BlackBerry Messenger 5.0 (BBM) RIM really added some overhead in the app. It seems much less responsive than the original and can take a few seconds to open up a chat to view it. One of our writers, JohnnyB, Told me that he changed one small option and now all of a sudden chats open fast! It looks like all the fancy chat styling RIM added in BBM 5.0 really slows the app down.
Practically everybody on the BerryReview team has turned the BBM “Conversation Style” option to “Standard” and now BBM really purrs. It does not look half as nice as the chat bubbles or stripes but it makes the app very responsive.
If you want to give it a shot just follow these instructions:
- Open up BlackBerry Messenger 5.0
- Press the Menu button
- Select Options
- Scroll down to where it says Conversation Style
- Change the option to Standard
- Enjoy the speed!
I thought it was a fluke at first but everybody who has tried it has reported back positive results. Let us know if it works for you!

In bubbles the other person you’re talking to background is in a blue shaded area around their convo and yours is white.
In standard the entire convo screen is white

Tried it out and I think it sped things up. I don’t think I use it enough to notice a huge difference though. I’ll stick with the pretty bubbles!
